Katherine Atkinson is an arts consultant, musician and performer. She is committed to cultural democracy through the arts, engagement with communities and public policy.
Katherine plays the violin, piano and sings. She managed youth arts and arts development for the Arts Council of South Australia, directed retail operations and PR for The Body Shop, and performed as a professional musician/actor in Australia, before moving to Ireland in the early 1990s where she continued to perform in both music and theatre.
From the National Concert Hall to the Skerries Soundwaves Festival with the Simon Quigley Ensemble, from Whelan’s to the Róisín Dubh with Ann Scott, from the Dave Murphy Songwriters Session to Anu Productions and from Lines of Negotiation: Mapping the Land at the Lexicon to the Dublin Live Art Festival, Katherine has performed in a range of settings across many genres.
Prior to taking up her role at Music Generation Wexford, Katherine worked for Create – the national development agency for collaborative arts – and on behalf of Create with the Arts Council, where she was manager and trainer for Extending Architecture: an Arts Council training and professional development initiative, and manager of the Artist in the Community Scheme. As part of her role, Katherine managed the Cork 2005: European Capital of Culture Community Based Programme.
Katherine holds an MA in Public Culture Studies from the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology, a Diploma in Theatre and Drama Studies from NUI Maynooth and a Certificate of Music TAFE South Australia. She is a member of the Edges & Margins Collective, the Unitarian Choir and Visual Arts Ireland.
