28 young musicians from Donegal have by now completed their first exciting day as part of Soundwaves 2 – an inspiring, jam-packed three-day programme during which they will write, record, produce and promote their own original songs and music videos.
Working alongside the participants is the extraordinarily talented Wall2Wall Music Soundwaves 2 Team: Artistic Director and Facilitator, Sarah Murphy; Musician and Facilitator, Seamus Devenny; Audio and Video Producer and Facilitation, Feargus Murphy; and Jeremy Howard. Cheylene Murphy (Wonder Villains, Pleasure Beach, Beauty Sleep) will also work with the young musicians on developing their expertise in promoting and marketing their work, as well as on their songwriting modules.
Soundwaves 2 is taking place in Letterkenny’s Regional Cultural Centre (RCC) from 15 – 17 March 2016.
The project takes a Creative Lab approach to improvisation – leading and arranging in the moment, creating starting points, and exploring entry points to collaborative group composition and songwriting. The young people will also create video resources around improvisation using mobile technology which they can, in turn, share with other young people in Music Generation partnerships across Ireland.
At the end of the three days there will be an informal sharing performance for parents and members of the community in Letterkenny who are interested to experience the process and its outcomes.
A flexible approach to engagement is at the heart of the Wall2Wall Music ethos. The pace of work and even some of the activities scheduled for Soundwaves 2 will be adjusted to suit the participants who walk through door of the RCC, and everyone is excited by the possibilities.
You can keep up to date on daily activities on the Soundwaves 2 blog, or check in on what’s happening on social media online or using the hashtag #Soundwaves2016.
We look forward to sharing some fantastic music videos on our website in the coming weeks. You can take a look at the work of last year’s participants on our YouTube channel.
Soundwaves is funded under the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership and delivered on behalf of Donegal Music Education Partnership by Wall2Wall Music. The Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership enables children and young people to engage actively with high-calibre professional musicians from all genres of music.
