Over 3 months in 2015, musicians and singers in County Mayo took part in a in a unique project to explore and develop their songwriting and musical skills. Songbirds / SongSPARKS, a Music Generation / Arts Council Partnership Project, offered young musicians and singers aged 13 to 18 the opportunity to participate in a programme of workshops, taking them through the songwriting process from sketch to demo to a final recording of their song/music.
Songbirds musicians showed participants how to develop structure and harmony in their compositions, as well as looking at topics such as arrangement, music appreciation, recording and live performance tips including microphone technique and stage set-up.
The aim of the project was to provide young musicians with the tools necessary for creative expression through lyrics and music and to become future drivers of similar projects as part of their own musical development.
Recordings took place throughout the project and this Saturday will see the launch a very special, professionally mastered CD is being released, featuring recordings from the participants in the project!
On launch day the group will reunite for a collective writing and performance session, followed by a final group jam to celebrate the release of this songSPARKS record.
