We are delighted to welcome Avril to the Music Generation team. Cork native, Avril Crotty joins Music Generation South Dublin to lead the project as Music Development Manager. Avril completed her BMus degree in C.I.T. Cork School of Music where she studied cello with Joan Scannell, music technology with Hugh McCarthy and conducting & orchestration with Alan Cutts amongst other subjects. During her time there, she was a member of the Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr Geoffrey Spratt. She was selected to represent the college at an International Program of Study in Finland, ‘Towards Creative Entrepreneurship”, which saw her collaborate with music and other creative arts students from countries like Norway, Finland, Estonia & the UK. While at college, Avril was a founding member of Elektra, one of Ireland's only electric string quartets and she also found the time to conduct St. Johns Choral Group in Blackrock, Cork City. She performed regularly with the Joan Denise Moriarty School of Ballet as a soloist and has premiered works by some of Ireland’s newest composers.
Avril went on to study a Masters in Music Business Management with the University of Westminster in London. Her thesis questioned the correlation between studying classical music and purchase and resulted in her graduating with an honours degree. While in London, Avril performed regularly with the London Mahler Orchestra and taught beginners piano to schoolchildren in Harrow. She also combined her love of music with business, having worked with companies such as Global Publishing in their synchronization department.
Since returning to Ireland, Avril has worked in marketing for multiple performing arts organisations such as The Gaiety School of Acting – The National Theatre School of Ireland, Under My Bed and Runcible Spoon Theatre Company. She also worked as a freelance music educator in schools across Dublin and Kildare and continues to work with St Agnes’ Violin and Orchestra Project in Crumlin.
She is currently a member of Dublin Symphony Orchestra and Co-Orch Dublin.
Avril joined us earlier this week and is thrilled to be part of the team. We wish her every success in her new role and look forward to the next phase of Music Generation South Dublin.
