I’ve always loved singing and I would say my voice is my instrument. I first got involved in Music Generation Offaly/Westmeath in 2015 when my music teacher mentioned it to me and I asked my Mum to email to see if they had any spaces. I was delighted to be able to join.
It’s difficult to choose one thing I like most about Music Generation. I love meeting up with everyone and I’ve made so many new friends. It’s lovely to be part of the Singfest choir. We do the serious work but in a fun way. The tutors are really friendly and help us to sing our best. Greg Beardsell (our conductor) shows us how to move with the music so that we can really ‘feel’ the songs. This is so cool and I really get it now!
But, I think my favourite part of Music Generation is the big Singfest Gala Concert. I took part in Singfest last year too, and I was lucky enough to perform solo. It was an amazing experience for me and my parents; they must have replayed the video hundreds of times at this stage!
Music is part of who I am. I love music for making me happy when I’m sad, happier when I’m happy, calm when I’m annoyed. I feel I come alive when I sing out loud. Music gives me energy!
At the moment my favourite musicians are definitely Ed Sheeran, Anne-Marie, Zara Larsson, Niall Horan and Bruno Mars. At other times it depends on who I’m with and what they like. My Nanny and Poppy listen to country and western music so it’s all Nathan Carter and Kenny Rogers. I wasn’t always a fan but it’s starting to grow on me!
I really love musical theatre and spend hours on my Dad’s Spotify listening to music from Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. They are all great but I have a soft spot for ‘Cats’. I love pop music too and always give karaoke a go when I’m on holidays!
I have taken part in lots of different plays and productions. My first major role was in the Mullingar Arts Centre Christmas pantomime ‘Rapunzel’ in 2012. I played Rapunzel as a young girl. Last Christmas I was lucky enough to sing as part of The Late Late Toy Show. We sang ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake. It was a ‘once in a lifetime experience’.
Most recently I performed in Sean Gilligan’s production of Annie in the Helix, plying the part of Molly, one of the orphans. It was an unforgettable experience. I wanted to burn every memory into my brain so I could remember it forever! In the future I would love to perform in Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and maybe even the West End someday.
I’m definitely signing up for Music Generation next year. I’m hoping to do a few more auditions and will continue going to my singing lessons every week and get ready for next year’s exams. My parents want me to play an instrument. I tell them I am playing an instrument because my voice is an instrument ☺
My advice to someone thinking about getting involved in Music Generation? I would say ‘give it a go’. You’ll get hooked. It is a lovely friendly place where everyone does their best to make the most incredible music.
Oh, and ‘Don’t hold back’!
