Hot on the heels of the sucess of the musical spectacle Blue Bottle at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre last November, Music Generation Wicklow are first out of the traps in 2015 with the announcement of a further new music commission.
The Wicklow Ways by Vincent Kennedy will be presented in the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray on Sunday 22 March 2015 at 3pm with a second performance at 4.30pm.
This newly written work will feature a group of 75 young musicians from Lacken National School, Saint Cronan’s National School Bray, Saint Laurence’s National School Greystones and Scoil Chaoimhín Naofa Gleann dá Loch. The company of musicians will playing recorder, ukulele and violin and supported by Music Generation tutors and musicians on percussion and piano. Composer Vincent Kennedy was inspired by the sights and sounds of Wicklow past and present when writing this piece.
Born in Dublin, Vincent studied trumpet at CBS Westland Row, the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the DIT Conservatory of Music. He won many prizes and performed with many ensembles before establishing himself as a composer. He has written for orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal combinations and his music has been performed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, amongst others, and by numerous symphonic wind ensembles, brass and pipe bands throughout Ireland, Europe, USA and Canada.
The Wicklow Ways has been commissioned by Wicklow County Council under the Per Cent for Art Scheme on behalf of Music Generation Wicklow and is produced by the Contemporary Music Centre.
