On Wednesday, May 22nd 2013, Music Generation Mayo held a Youth Music Showcase Event in the Ballina Arts Centre to celebrate the establishment of our Youth Music Hub at the arts Centre. We had a great line-up of young performers accompanied by headline act Race The Flux - here is a video of singer-songwriter Maria Kelly from Westport in our video booth before her performance on-stage. Maria writes her own material and was national winner of the Schools Got Talent Competition this year - watch this video and you'll see why!
The Youth Music Hub will promote and encourage youth music based activities and performances for young people aged 13-18 years of age. Young musicians can become members of the hub to avail of a range of resources and supports, membership costs are €30 per individual for a six-month period.
Resources available include a dedicated rehearsal space, fully kitted out with professional instruments and equipment. Members can book into the space, rehearse with their friends, record demos and get advice and guidance from Dennis McCalmont, our part-time Resource Worker at the Hub. Dennis who is a practising musician and performer, has many years of experience in working with and facilitating young people in a music context.
Members can also avail of a series of music workshops and advice clinics that will be programmed on a continuing basis at a nominal cost. Information on suitable opportunities that arise locally and nationally will be disseminated via the Youth Music Hub and members will be encouraged to contribute to the programming of events and to collaborate with other member musicians and performers.
