Five young musicians from Music Generation Louth travelled to Dublin last Saturday morning, 25 June to perform for guests at the American Ambassador’s Residence in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, including US Vice-President Joe Biden and US Ambassador to Ireland, Kevin O’Malley. These Young Ambassadors – members of the Music Generation Louth Harp Ensemble – performed an energetic and diverse repertoire of traditional and contemporary music under the direction of their tutor Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla.
Among the selection of music played was O Carolan’s Farewell, The Chaftpoole Post, The Rose in the Gap, the Roscommon Reel, and an arrangement from Game of Thrones.
Established in 2013, the Music Generation Louth Harp Ensemble is comprised of 12 players learning with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Éireann Dun Dealgan or Music Generation Louth, who meet twice monthly in Dundalk to rehearse. This exciting performance opportunity featured the five senior members of the group, ages 13 to 18 years.
Speaking at the performance, Music Generation Louth Coordinator Gemma Murray said “It is such an exciting opportunity for this group to perform for Vice President Joe Biden and the US Ambassador to Ireland. They have been working hard to present a great repertoire and sound fabulous. Guests today are in for a very special musical treat.”
Rosaleen Molloy, National Director, Music Generation said: “I would like to congratulate these senior members of the Music Generation Louth Harp Ensemble for their truly engaging performance this morning in such special surrounds. It is a privilege for us to have the opportunity to perform at such prestigious venues and it will have been particularly memorable for the young people to have played in the company of the US Vice President Joe Biden. We are very grateful to the US Embassy in Ireland for providing a platform to bring the music of the group to an international stage.”
Earlier this month, three members of the Ensemble were awarded scholarships to attend An Chúirt Chruitireachta, the Irish Harp Festival, which takes place from Sunday 26 June to Friday 1 July at An Grianán, Termonfeckin.
Music Generation Louth musician and tutor Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla is an experienced professional who has performed across Europe, including two consecutive years as Harpist to the Irish Delegation attending the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, Brittany. She has played at Áras an Uachtarán on behalf of DIT Conservatory of Music and as a representative of Feis Ceoil.
Music Generation’s Young Ambassadors programme provides opportunities for young musicians throughout Ireland to perform at national and international events.
