Music Generation Laois has launched an exciting New Works Series, which will bring young musicians together with acclaimed professional musicians and composers to collaborate, write and perform a series of new works for ensembles in the county.
As part of this Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership Project, three composers across diverse genres and styles will work with the young musicians throughout the month of May, culminating in the premiere of their new compositions at a Gala Concert on Sunday 22nd at the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise.
Martin Tourish, composer and accordionist with the Donegal-based band Altan, will work with the Music Generation Laois Trad Orchestra and Choir to create a new 20-minute piece of music entitled ‘1916: Visions and Voices’, marking the Centenary of the 1916 Rising.
Renowned composer Elaine Agnew from Northern Ireland will work with the Laois School of Music Youth Orchestra to create a 20-minute composition for Youth Orchestra and Choir.
Scottish Virtuoso Harpist Catriona McKay will work with the Music Generation Laois Harp Ensemble to create a brand new 10-minute musical performance.

The Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership enables children and young people across the Music Education Partnerships to engage actively with high-calibre professional musicians from all genres of music. The Arts Council has invested €450,000 in the programme (2013-16) which is now facilitating an ambitious range of residencies, collaborative performances and composition projects around the country.
‘1916: Visions and Voices’ is inspired by the actions and events of the 1916 Rising and is part of the ‘Ireland 2016’ programme of events in County Laois, funded by the Laois 2016 Community Grants Scheme.
All three works in the Music Generation Laois New Works Series are funded by Per Cent for Art through the Laois Arts Office.
