Music Generation Carlow in partnership with the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin and Carlow Cathedral have come up with an exciting new initiative which offers the opportunity for young singers to gain vocal training from leading specialists in choral sacred music.
The Carlow Cathedral Choral Scholars Programme, which is aimed at young people aged between 15 and 18, is a ground-breaking initiative which will introduce the participants to the extraordinary and wonderful world of this powerful and uplifting music. The group’s primary performance focus will be in the context of the liturgical and musical life of the Cathedral, with weekly group choral practice, specialist voice training and choral workshops led by some of our finest vocalists and choral music directors including:
• Regina Hanley, Voice Coaching (Operatic Soprano)
• David Forde, Choral Workshop (Organist and Choral Director)
• Greg Beardsell, Choral Workshop (Artistic Director of the Irish Youth Choir)
• Blanaid Murphy, Choral Director (Director of the Palestrina Choir)
• Liam Lawton (Composer)
• Marian Gaynor (Choral Director, Carlow Cathedral)
The programme’s vision is to inspire young people from all backgrounds to become involved, to achieve the highest possible standards in choral singing in this genre and to create a flagship ensemble to represent their community.
In addition, the programme also provides an ideal opportunity for a young person to fulfil the criteria necessary to achieve either a Gaisce President’s award or a Pope John Paul II Award.
Rehearsals will take place on Monday evenings, from 6.30pm to 8.15pm in Carlow Cathedral, with a nominal fee of €95 per participant for the entire year to cover costs.
