Music Generation Wicklow has four commissions underway thanks to the partnership with Wicklow County Arts Office and Music Generation Wicklow. Wicklow County Arts Office will artistically lead and develop the commissions and they will be produced by the Contemporary Music Centre of Ireland (www.cmc.ie).

All four commissions will provide a valuable additional experience for children and young people to meet and work with composers. In the region of 600 young people will participate in the process as composers develop the work and the final performance.

It is the intention of the Commissions Strand to animate young people’s experience of music participation and performance. This is as a counterpoint to the excellent music education experience being provided throughout the other Music Generation Wicklow strands. The Commissions Strand will be delivered across the MGW Programme with the same integral focus on quality of both the music practice and participation experience for young people.

Composer Elaine Agnew:
In 2012 Elaine Agnew received a BBC Proms commission and the premiere of Dark Hedges by the Ulster Youth Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra and Sir James Galway in the Royal Albert Hall was a huge success, one reviewer describing it as “compelling from beginning to end.”

Her works have featured at major festivals including the BBC London Proms, the Belfast Festival at Queen’s, London BMIC Cutting Edge, Spitalfields and the Slovenian Unicum Festival and in many world-class venues: the Carnegie, Wigmore and Royal Albert Halls and the Konzerthaus Berlin. Elaine is much in demand for her innovative and creative work with people of all ages across a broad field of work that includes education, community and healthcare. She is the Artistic Advisor of Music Network's Continuing Professional Development Programme.

Elaine read music at Queen’s University Belfast studying with composers Kevin Volans and Michael Alcorn and then followed with postgraduate studies in composition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with James MacMillan and Judith Weir.
