Music Generation Sligo was proud to produce a very successful opening concert for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann at the Hawk’s Well Theatre on Sunday 10th August 2014 with Dervish, West Ocean String Quartet, Sligo Academy of Music Orchestra and young traditional musicians. The concert was programmed by Neil Martin - Artistic Director and MC - who arranged scores of music for the intergenerational ensemble including works by composers across the generations O Carolan (16th/17th Century), Coleman (19th/20th Century) and Brendan Graham, present on the night!
A 60-strong ensemble performed to a full house in a concert which was the final part of a 3-month Music Generation Arts Council Partnership Programme. The first part of the programme, took place in June with two intensive composition and performance weeks in The Model for young musicians who were mentored by and performed with these professional full time musicians and with Neil Martin as composer. The first week produced a number of brilliant new compositions, one of which ‘The Three Wishes’ was premiered during the second half of the concert by the young composers themselves Alice Purcell, Síofra Hanley, Dúlra Hanley and Liam Needham, joined by the full ensemble. Also in the second half were a large number of the participants from the performance week, either in the orchestra or joining in some of the repertoire. Young singers joined with Cathy Jordan for stunning performances of a number of songs including The Sally Gardens and Knocknashee, composed by Brendan Graham.
The audience jumped to their feet as the 60-strong ensemble, masters and apprentices, ended with a highly-charged set of Coleman’s Reels – the Sligo composer who is being celebrated during the Fleadh.
