The first of the projects funded under the new Partnership between Music Generation and The Arts Council is underway in Music Generation Sligo.
The focus of Music Generation Sligo’s project is a Music Fusion Programme where two professional groups, Dervish and the West Ocean String Quartet will share their ‘trad and ‘classical’ worlds with young Sligo musicians culminating in a concert during Fleadh Cheoil Sligo in the Hawk’s Well Theatre on 10th August.
The first strand of the project is a Young Composers Week with established composer / musician Neil Martin, which follows on the success of the Young Composer Mentoring Programme of Music Generation Sligo’s Big Bang Composer in Residence Programme 2012/2013. This week (June 3rd – 6th), 10 Young Composers are developing their skills and interest in composition following the theme of trad-classical fusion writing material that will feed into both Strand 2 and the concert in August as part of the Fleadh.
The second strand of the project is a Young Ensemble Performance Week with West Ocean String Quartet and Dervish. Dervish and West Ocean String Quartet have international reputations for their outstanding musicianship, and both are deeply-rooted in the music of Sligo. These two professional ensembles will work together with young musicians and singers aged 13-18 years from classical and trad backgrounds to create a unique Music Fusion collaboration in advance of the Fleadh. The aims of the week are to expand the horizons and musical development of the young musicians and to offer young musicians the opportunity of working closely with established professional musicians, of performing alongside them, and of improving their own ensemble performances.
