As part of Culture Night 2015, The Laois Arts Office and Music Generation Laois will host a series of Songwriting Workshops and a concert with Irish Singer Songwriter John Spillane.
Irish Singer-Songwriter, John Spillane celebrates 33 years of an ever-consistent, vastly illuminating and exciting career within the world of music. John will visit 5 schools in Co Laois who participate in the Music Generation Laois Programmes and the Music Generation Laois School of Rock and Pop, and facilitate songwriting workshops – the focus of these workshops is using the Irish language as a tool for songwriting and allowing the students to realise the possibilities of creating songs and music ‘as Gaeilge’. John Spillane will help students examine and enjoy the Irish ballad tradition and show how a story may be told in a song. He will encourage and help them lose inhibitions and fears they may have about writing songs.
Workshops are free of charge, and participants and their families are invited to attend a free concert on Friday evening at the Mountmellick Arts Centre, Co Laois at 7pm on the 18th September that will feature the students, John and the pieces of work that they have created together, as well as many songs from John Spillane’s well-known albums.
Free admission to the concert but, in order to insure a seat, please contact the Dunamaise Arts Centre on 057-8663355 to reserve a free ticket.
