Music Generation Cork City in partnership with ARTlifeCULTURE presents summer SING!, a large-scale children’s singing festival that will bring together more than 300 children, young people, musicians and volunteers for a week of creativity, artistic engagement and performance throughout the historic, cultural and civic spaces of Cork City. The festival encompasses a week of ensemble and small-group singing opportunities, open-air warm-ups, rehearsals and impromptu public performances, culminating in a major concert performance at City Hall, Cork on Friday, 22 July 2016 at 2pm.
summer SING! 2016 will take place from Monday, 18 July to Friday, 22 July inclusive and from 9am to 3pm each day.
President and Artistic Director of Chicago Children’s Choir, Josephine Lee will join the 2016 summer SING! as Guest Conductor and Children’s Choral Specialist. Alicia Edwards, Children’s Chorus Manager at the METropolitan Opera New York City, returns as Festival Operations Director for the fourth year running, and leading Irish conductor David Brophy will mentor the next generation of summer SING! young conductors.
This significant choral project will also feature ‘SING! and SIGN!’ performances in collaboration with Cork Deaf Association, featuring Orla O’Sullivan.
summer SING! 2016 will give more than 200 children and young people ages 6 to 14 the chance to experience singing in Cork City. Together with a team of some 100+ specialist professional and volunteer staff from Ireland and around the world the young singers will experience the rich history and culture of the City, while nurturing their natural singing ability.
Now in its fourth year, summer SING! encourages young, aspiring musicians and singers to build their self-expression, confidence and positive self-esteem through artistic engagement, empowered public performance and shared civic pride.
Each day parents and friends are welcomed to witness the children’s accumulation of learning through a series of informal, open-rehearsal-style performances. On the final Friday of the festival staff and child participants combine, as all 300+ summer singers promenade Cork City, SINGING! all the way. At 2pm the ensemble stages a massed festival concert performance at City Hall, Cork. All summer SING! performances are free and open to the public.
summer SING! is produced by ARTlifeCULTURE in partnership with Music Generation Cork City and is further supported by the Arts Council, Cork City Council Social Inclusion Unit, Cork City Council Arts Office, University College Cork International Office and the Association of Irish Choirs. summer SING! is realised through extensive collaboration with participating DEIS primary schools, targeted children’s communities, charitable institutions specifically Cork Penny Dinners, and Cork City’s cultural venues. summer SING! 2016 welcomes international volunteer staff from the Metropolitan Opera New York City and the Chicago Children’s Choir.
