September 17th 2014: Music Generation, in association with the National Concert Hall and Local Music Education Partnerships, will present Performance, Participation and Partnership: Looking to the Future – a National Music Education Conference and Gala Concert on October 13th and 14th, 2014. Taking place at the National Concert Hall, this exciting two-day event will feature some of the groundbreaking work happening in music education throughout the country through Music Generation – Ireland’s National Music Education Programme that helps children and young people access high quality subsidised music tuition in their local area. This conference and showcase event promises to be a dynamic ‘show and tell’ experience not to be missed which will feature performances, presentations, information sharing, networking, discussion forums and models of local, national and international best practice in performance music education. President Michael D. Higgins will be the special guest of honour on Monday evening October 13th for the 7.30pm Gala Performance.

Over 300 young musical ambassadors from Carlow, Cork City, Donegal, Laois, Louth, Limerick City, Mayo, Sligo, Offaly, Westmeath and Wicklow will perform over the two days. Included in the line up are the Music Generation Louth Junior String Orchestra, Music Generation Mayo Kaleidoscope Big Band and Music Generation Sligo Youth Choir and Sligo Academy of Music Sinfonietta, all of whom will feature in the Gala Concert.

Conference speakers will include internationally renowned Composer Bill Whelan, Broadcaster, Filmmaker and Musician Philip King and Katherine Zeserson, Director of Learning & Participation, The Sage Gateshead UK.

Speaking about the event, Rosaleen Molloy National Director of Music Generation commented, “We are delighted to be presenting this exciting partnership event to celebrate the significant achievements of this hugely successful music education initiative. The conference will provide the opportunity to bring together a range of individuals from the arts and education sectors including musicians, music educators, policy makers, youth workers, child care practitioners, teachers, lecturers, parents, arts managers, education managers and public representatives.”

Music Generation is currently established in twelve areas of the country – Carlow, Cork City, Clare, Laois, Louth, Limerick City, Offaly/Westmeath, Mayo, Sligo, South Dublin and Wicklow. The programme provides local access for some 20,000 children and young people annually to a range of vocal and instrumental tuition, creating employment opportunities for 250 musicians. Initiated by Music Network, the programme is co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Skills and Local Music Education Partnerships.
